We all have our fingers crossed for a successful hatch this year. Simba, to the delight of thousands, fledged the nest a few months later. Unfortunately, Cookie didn’t survive a rather harsh and cold storm that winter. Their last successful hatch was in 2019 when they welcomed eaglets Simba and Cookie. Losing thier eggs to crows, breakage, and the one pip that started to hatch never emerged. After weeks of patiently waiting and nesting, a pair of bald eagles. We are watching every move of Jackie and Shadow at their Big Bear Lake. Jackie is constantly squawking orders at him. I havent been so captivated by a Bald Eagle nest ever. The largest known bald eagle nest on record was over 9 feet wide and 20 feet deep Our nest is more modest in comparison, only about 5 feet wide and 6 feet deep, but there is so much work to do and so many sticks in the forest Jackie and Shadow tend to add between 600-800 sticks per year. Each year thousands watch as Shadow brings more sticks than they know what to do with. Their nest is located in the northwest part of the valley and is in a protected area which is closed to the public during mating season.

Many throughout the world watch each year as Shadow and Jackie return to thier nest each winter and ready the nest for eaglets. This could bring a return of cool and unsettled weather to the region by next weekend.If you are into bird watching, or even if you aren’t, you probably know about Big Bear’s bald eagles, Shadow and Jackie, who appear on the Big Bear Eagle Cam hosted by the Friends of Big Bear Valley. Thereafter, another Pacific trough could spin up a closed low which could move in our direction later next week. Low pressure should exit the area by Monday with cool and breezy conditions expected through the middle of next week. If planning outdoor activities keep a watchful eye to the sky and head indoors if a thunderstorm approaches your area. The pair successfully hatched one eaglet but on June 6, 2013, a strong storm blew the nest down and the parents successfully fledged the eaglet on the ground. Any thunderstorms that develop could be capable of producing heavy rain, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and hail. This Bald Eagle Cam is located in Pittsburgh along the Monongahela River and this pair first started nesting here in 2013. Highs will drop into the lower 60's over the weekend while overnight lows remain in the 30's. Thunderstorm activity could be fairly widespread, especially Saturday, leading to cooler temperatures once again. Another trough approaching the west coast tomorrow will lift our low northeastward through the area over the weekend bringing another good round of showers and storms.

Overnight lows will reach the mid to upper 30's with easterly winds 5-10 mph at times. This will also allow temperatures to moderate with highs closer to average as we top out in the upper 60's. Activity should be a little less widespread for today and tomorrow as the low retrogrades westward a bit. This system will continue to draw moisture into the region with daytime heating & instability to trigger isolated afternoon thundershowers.
